Now I see… or rather now I “grok”. I clicked on a link that looked inward bound and got the redirect experience. Very clever. Any downside? All those cgi redirects contribute to server overhead.... possible impact on web hosting fees?

Hi, Francois. Actually, those apparently inward-directed links redirect to whatever URL one inputs into the comment form. This came with a bit of code I added in a while back that allowed for proper comment-anchoring, I think. I was pretty surprised when I saw it the first time, but I think the main effect is that any URLs that one attempts to link to (if one were, say, a comment-spam engine) don’t actually appear in my page’s code, and thus don’t add to their site’s page rank. I think.

OFF topic.... KF, you might want to check the stylesheets. It appears that links in the signatures to comments are all inward bound (i.e. cgi script to planned obsol.) intended?

Simply put, that’s very sad. And I feel the same way you do; not that I didn’t think there was any racism in Claremont, but I wouldn’t have ever expected anything like this. It’s also disappointing that a pseudo-fraternity is involved, since their presence on the 5C campuses isn’t exactly celebrated by the administration.
As for your students being insightful enough to consider these acts in a larger context than intention… that’s great and all, but somehow I think it’s pretty clear these days what a cross-burning signifies, and in this case disregarding intent is giving the perpetrators the benefit of a doubt that I don’t have.
A college president suggesting that such an act is “standard drunken behavior” leads to so many questions (i.e. is standard drunken behavior acceptable?, is cross-burning standard behavior among anyone but inveterate racists?, how easy is it to get a college president dismissed?).
There’s plenty more to say about this (not to mention the idiotic scavenger hunt, in which case it is important to make clear that “it was supposed to be a funny joke” is not an acceptable excuse), but I’m sure someone else has already made any point I might offer. I just hope this at least leads to some kind of acknowledgment of problems that had been ignored before.

This is terrible news. I’m amazed that a college president would say that the actions should be divorced from any racist implications.

The fraternity incident is also upsetting. A similar Polaroid scavenger hunt used to take place at Indiana University and got a lot of coverage in the late 1990s. They had pledges get photos with “an Indian store clerk,” “a fat chick,” etc. Really distasteful stuff. Sorry to hear you’re dealing with all that.

this is terrible, terrible. but RIGHT ON for your students and for you to foster an environment where they can speak about such topics.

it’s almost hard for me to believe that something like that happened at the colleges. almost, because i guess i’ve experienced a bit more in the way of ugly race relations in the past few years. and because i’ve heard and read enough about things that have transpired at pomona since i graduated to shake up my generally warm and fuzzy memories.
