Go ahead. Give in to Irony. After all it’s not cynicism.

Okay, granted, “when it rains, its pours” could conceivably be optimistic, if you were a farmer, perhaps, and really really needed rain. Having just over the last couple of days watching Jean de Florette and Manon of the Spring, that possibility did occur to me. But right behind it, I started thinking about such rains in SoCal; when it pours, the topsoil gets washed away, which undoes the whole good-thingness of rain, farm-wise.

And Francois? Helen Keller? Yes, there’s a model for optimism in the face of all sorts of worldly forces to the contrary—but it’s hard not to read that phrase as wildly ironic, all things considered…

Made me do a bit of searching ...

Helen Keller is reputed to have said “Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows.”

"When sorrows come...” No, wait. Are we sure that “When it rains, it pours” isn’t optimistic?
