Thanks for the confirmation about Sprint’s service here, Jake. I had a feeling that life out here in this “geographically undesirable” location (see entry above) wouldn’t allow for the service I want.

And BT, I’ll definitely keep you posted on my purchase, once it happens. Of course, the new iPods are making me drool—but it’s either a cell phone with a proper antenna or an mp3 player for me, for the time being. Sigh.

The Tungsten looks like the best device of the three, but AT&T service is, unfortunately, worthless around here. I’ve got Sprint, which isn’t much better. At least I have the good fortune to be moving on to an actual urban environment soon - you’re screwed!

I had Sprint when I first got a cell phone. Pretty good connectivity and sound quality (everywhere I went-- NYC, Chicago, and San Francisco on a visit), but man was it expensive.

Now we have AT&T, which feels like exactly the opposite problem. The plan is the cheapest I’ve found, but sometimes I feel like I’m using a walkie-talkie. Also, my phone, by comparison to the slim little ones I’ve seen others carry, is a monster.

This may have no bearing on SoCal service, though.

I want a combo phone-PDA very much—please post your results if you wind up going that way… If they could attach a decent MP3 player to it, so much the better.

I switched about two years ago from AT&T to Verizon precisely because the AT&T service here was so bad—we’re in the middle of a bad trough between their towers, I think. I guess I was kind of hoping that Cingular or Sprint or T-Mobile or somebody would be acceptable around here, but…

Verizon, from what I hear, has the best service in SoCal. Dinner bell-like quality and sound. AT&T and Cingular are touch and go.
