Hi, Matt. Generally speaking, I’d say yes—except that what I’m pretty sure happened in this case was that both of the presenters before me HAD in fact written full papers—and then attempted to present the entire thing, rather than presenting either a summary or a section thereof.

Really, I think the key element is the session chair—who should preferably not be a speaker on the panel, who should be properly briefed, as you say, and who should warn the speakers that s/he will give them time limit warnings and then will stop them abruptly at some pre-determined point over time. Without someone directing traffic in that way, I just don’t think it can work, full papers or no…

Ouch, don’t you just *hate* it when that happens. Note to self: ensure conference session chairs are appointed, briefed and cheered! for future AoIR coferences.

I too was struck by the lack of presentation ability in the conference - and I might well include myself in there. I think I got the timing right, at least, but was not happy with the way I had to speed through a couple of bits which I’d misestimated.

Maybe we should be requesting fully written papers for the conference (or, at least, indicating in the program those papers that ARE fully written?)
